Training camp roundup: Quarterback battles underway in Eagles, Jets camps (Shutdown Corner)
Jul 27th 2013, 00:20

Friday was not quite as busy as Thursday was, but it was another eventful day in the National Football League. Four more teams reported to training camp, some draft picks signed, players were placed on either the "physically unable to perform" or "non-football injury/illness" lists, and Tim Tebow caught passes at New England Patriots training camp. Here's a quick roundup of the day's events: • Geoff Mosher of CSN Philadelphia reports that Nick Foles was sharp during Philadelphia Eagles practice, completing 13-of-14 pass attempts with the first-team offense and 20-of-24 of his total throws. Michael Vick was 14-of-20 and was intercepted on his first attempt. • In other quarterback battle news, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York writes that New York Jets rookie Geno Smith has the physical tools, but Mark Sanchez currently has the advantage in terms of where to go with the football. The operative word being "currently". Sanchez is helping Smith anyway he can. "I think it's the right thing to do. I think you got to be a pro no matter what you're doing," Sanchez said on Friday. "I think when I came in as a rookie, Kellen Clemens and I were competing, but Kellen wasn't shy. If I were to ask him a question (he'd) help me out and that's the way I learned. I guess that's just kind of the way I was brought up in this league and I think it's the right thing to do. Maybe not everybody does it, but that's me." Smith was asked about his relationship with Sanchez. "I appreciate Mark for what he does for me on and off the field," said Smith. "He helps me, he teaches me, he helps me get acclimated to the pro game and we have a really good relationship. When we're on the field we encourage one other but we also compete." • Big day at Saint Vincent College as the Pittsburgh Steelers reported to training camp. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that center Maurkice Pouncey apologized once again for wearing a "Free Hernandez" hat at his birthday party. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is experiencing " a little discomfort " in the knee he had surgery on in June. • And did you know that Tomlin is now on Twitter. You can follow him @CoachTomlin ? As of Friday night, Tomlin was approaching 50,000 followers. So not only do Steelers fans travel well, they social network well, too.
